Mizoram used to have only one railway station, Bairabi Station, but now with the opening of Bairabi – Sairang railway line, Mizoram now has two railway stations. Name of the new staion is Sairang Railway Staion. It is a major step towards connecting Mizoram to the other parts of the country.
The Big Gift
The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the 51.38-km long Bairabi–Sairang railway line on 13th September 2025. Mizoram was one of the few states whose capital is not connected with the railway line in India. With this historic inauguration, the state capital, Aizwal, Mizoram is now directly connected to India’s national railway network. Along with the inauguration of the railway line, some major new train services were flagged off — for example, a direct premium train from Sairang Station to Delhi.
Engineering Marvel in Nature's Lap
Mizoram is sitting in the lap of the Himalayas, so building a railway line here is an extremely challenging job. It took years to build this line, and it costed around 8,000 crores to construct this railway line. This line passes through extremely rugged terrain, incorporating 48 tunnels and numerous major bridges. All these tunnels and bridges surrounded by mountains, forests and rivers make the journey even more beautiful. Bringing Indian Railways here is undoubtedly an engineering marvel. You will realize it once you go on any Aizawl train. It is definitely one of the best train journeys in India.
New Journey for Mizoram
With this Bairabi–Sairang line, Mizo ram is more connected to the other parts of the country. This will increase mobility for all – locals, business person as well as tourists. It will reduce the transportation cost and transportation time to Aizawl. With increased mobility, Mizoram is now expecting more tourists to come and explore its scenic hills, culture and heritage. Better and cheap mobility also means an increase in local business. Now, a goods and freight train is also running till Aizawl (Sairang), which will also give a major boost to local businesses and infrastructure development as the prices of cement, iron and other construction items will get lower.
A New Paradise for Travelers
Mizoram is an extremely beautiful place and is very much unexplored. There are many travelers like me who want to explore this beautiful place full of nature, culture and tradition. This new train line will give everyone a budget friendly option as well as a time saving and convenient option to explore Mizoram. As trains are now directly available from New Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati.
Bairabi – Sairang railway line is a transformational moment for Mizoram. Now we can visit capital city of Mizoram by train. With increased mobility and lower costs, it will attract lots of tourists like me to one of the most beautiful states and a very lesser explored state of Bharat.
