Tourist Places in Tawang that You Should Not Miss

Tawang is a beautiful place — a mix of spirituality, history, awesome landscapes and culture. It has lots of amazing places in Tawang and nearby places, which you would not like to miss. So, today we are going to see some of the must visit places in Tawang and experiences that you should explore in Tawang or just few kilometres from Tawang. 

1. Tawang Monastery

Tawang Monastery is the largest monastery in India and the second largest in the world. It was founded in 1680 by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso and is also known as Gaden Namgyal Lhatse. The monastery has a school, home to around 300 monks and a massive 28-foot golden statue of Lord Buddha. Its walls are decorated with exquisite thangkas, manuscripts, and murals depicting Buddhist teachings. It also has a museum where you can learn about its history. From monastery you can enjoy an amazing view of the Tawang-Chu valley

2. Birth Place of 6th Dalai Lama

All the Dalai Lama were born in Tibet except 6th Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso who was born here in Tawang. His birth place is now a monastery, Urgelling Monastery, it is around 5 km from city centre. Little away from city it is located at a peaceful location. Inside, it houses ancient scriptures, thangkas, and relics that preserve Buddhist traditions. The monastery also has three holy trees they also have its story. 

3. Tawang War Memorial

The Tawang War Memorial is a proud symbol of valour that Indian Army showed. It is made to honour all the Indian soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1962 Indo-China war. The names of over 2,420 brave soldiers who gave supreme sacrifice are engraved on granite plates. In evening you can see a light and sound show here which narrates the story of courage and resilience of 1962 war. Definitely visit here and honour those who fight for us. 

4. Museum of Valour

Major Ralegnao Bob Khathing Museum of Valour is located just opposite to Tawang War Memorial. The museum tells the story of formation of Arunachal Pradesh and it is dedicated to Major Bob Khathing who played the most important role in the formation of Arunachal Pradesh specially merger of Tawang. Here you will also learn about various tribes of the region and get to see lots of historical ornaments. Visit here to know about the history of Arunachal Pradesh and its merger in India. 

5. Giant Buddha Statue

When you will reach Tawang, you will see a golden statue of Lord Buddha it is visible from almost every corner of Tawang, this statue is the Giant Buddha Statue and temple. The temple is surrounded by praying flags and located at one of the highest points in the town. From here you can see whole town and breathtaking panoramic views.
