India is home to some of the tallest mountains in the world, many of them are sitting in the lap of the great Himalayas. These mountains attract people from all over the world to experience its majestic energy, culture and incredible feeling of climbing these mountains. Let’s see tallest mountains in India:
1. Kangchenjunga
Kangchenjunga is one of the eight thousanders (mountains whose heights are more tha 8,000 m) mountains, whose height is 8,586m. It is the 3rd highest mountain in the world located at India and Nepal border. It is not a single peak but comprises of five peaks the main Kangchenjunga summit and four more peaks and that’s why it is also known as “Five Treasures of Snow.” Locals consider it a sacred mountain and calls it “Sewa Lungma” and believe it is the guardian deity of the land. It is one of the most difficult mountains to climb, some consider it even harder than Mt. Everest.

2. Nanda Devi
It is named after Goddess Nanda Devi, a form of goddess Parvati. Situated in Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, Nanda devi height is 7,816m. It is worshipped as the presiding deity and protector of Uttarakhand. It is considered very sacred mountains and that has helped in protecting the beauty and natural state of the mountain. The Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, including the mountain and surrounding regions, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s renowned for its pristine beauty and ecological significance.

3. Kamet
3rd highest peak in India and 2nd highest in Garhwal region of Himalayas in Uttarakhand, Kamet is known for its challenging climb routes, remote location and extreme weather. Surrounded by massive glaciers like West and East Kamet Glaciers, height of Kamet is 7,756 meters. First climbed in 1931 by a British expedition led by Frank Smythe, Kamet Uttarakhand has some Tibetan influence with a beautiful landscape that attracts all adventure seekers.

4. Saltoto Kangri
Located near the Siachen Glacier, Saltoro Kangri is the fourth highest peak of India. Part of a Karakoram mountains, it has one of the most challenging climbs. Known for its twin summits, Saltoro Kangri I and II, the peak was first climbed in 1962 by an Indian expedition led by Major Narendra Kumar. You may not be allowed to climb its peak as it is a highly strategic region near LOC (Line of Control) between India and Pakistan because of which civilian access is restricted here.
5. Saser Kangri
Saser Kangri lies in the remote Ladakh region, near the borders of China and Pakistan. It is 5th tallest mountain in India and 35th highest mountain in the world. Saser Kangri is Known for its icy ridges, avalanches, and harsh weather conditions, it was first summited in 1973 by an Indian Army expedition team. It has multiple peaks Saser Kangri I, Saser Kangri II and Saser Kangri III. If you want to climb this then you need to take special permission because of its remote location and geopolitical sensitivities.

6. Mamostong Kangri
Mamostong Kangri is known as the “Mountain of Silver,” by locals. Located in Ladakh, it is surrounded by the icy terrains of the Siachen Glacier. It is very close to Line of Control (LOC) so, climbing it is restricted. It is first ascended in 1984 by an Indo-Japanese team led by Col. Balwant Sandhu. It is 48th tallest mountain in the world and 6th highest mountain in India.
