Apatani Tribe: The Heartbeat of Ziro Valley

Arunachal Pradesh is home to 26 major tribes and over 100 sub tribes. One of the most famous tribes in Arunachal Pradesh is Apatani tribe. Apatani tribe is one of the most fascinating indigenous of Arunachal which resides in Ziro Valley, one of the most popular places in Arunachal Pradesh. They are known for their rich traditions, unique agriculture practices and vibrant festivals. Let’s learn about them more.

Unique Agriculture

The Apatanis are known for their sustainable paddy-cum-fish cultivation system, a practice recognized globally for its eco-friendliness. They do not use any machinery or chemical fertilizers for irrigation and soil fertility. They produce organic crops, mostly producing rice alongside fish in the same fields. This traditional method has even been proposed for UNESCO recognition. Another amusing thing is Bamboo farms. The Bamboo farm of Apatani’s is different from other places in India. Their Bamboo is like that of Japanese bamboo farm. It is also a very good attraction that you should not miss.

Distinct Culture

Apatani women were once known for their distinctive nose plugs and facial tattoos. Though this practice is no more allowed you can still spot old women having traditional nose plugs and facial tattoos. This tradition started because Apatani women were very beautiful and are often kidnapped and forcefully married to men of another tribe. So, it was done to make them look less attractive and protect Apatani women. They also have lots of different traditional attire and jewelry. And their bamboo handicrafts also showcase their traditional artistic side.

Festivals and Celebrations

The Apatani community celebrates various festivals with lots of joy. Their most important festival that bring Ziro Valley alive with colors, music, and rituals is Myoko. It is celebrated in March, strengthens bonds of friendship and prosperity. While other important festival is Dree festival, which is celebrated in July. It is celebrated to pray for a good harvest. These occasions highlight their deep connection with nature and community life. Another celebration is Ziro Music festival, it is one of the best outdoor music festivals. It happens in the end of September each year. You can read about it here and join this festival this year.
