Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga of Maharashtra is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva which is spread across Bharat. It is located on top of a mountain in the village of Bhorgiri, around 125 Km from Pune. Today, I am going to tell you about how you can easily visit the Bhimashankar temple:
Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga Story
The story of Bhimashankar says that after defeating the demon Tripurasur here, Lord Shiva took a rest and the Bhima River originated from his sweat. So, this place is known as Bhimashankar, Bhima-the name of the river and Shankar-another name of Lord Shiv. The river is also known as Chandrabhaga in Pandharpur. The temple is built in the Nagara style, featuring intricate carvings and sculptures. Its structure is a good example of ancient architectural marvels of India.
How to Reach Bhimashankar?
Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is located on the mountain and is well-connected by road. The nearest railway station and airport are in Pune and from Pune to Bhimashankar it is around 125 km. Buses and cabs are easily available till Bhimashankar. You can also come from Mumbai, which is around 220 km from Bhimashankar. The most convenient and affordable option is to reach Pune Junction Railway Station and go to Shivaji Nagar Wakad Bus Stand on board a direct state government bus to Bhimashankar. I went there in December, and it took around 3-4 hrs to reach Bhimashankar from Pune by bus. The road to Bhimashankar goes through scenic and calming views to Sahyadri.
When to Visit Bhimashankar?
You can visit here throughout the year. During monsoon, the surroundings look even more beautiful and enchanting. However, you need to be a little more careful as it also becomes more slippery during monsoon. The best time to visit Bhimashankar is during winters when the weather is pleasant. You can easily stand in a long line if a crowd is there. You can also do nearby treks and other nearby places. During summer, the temple can feel warm, but nearby treks and nature can give you a relief from warm weather. I would suggest you go in the morning as early as possible. The bus from Pune starts as early as 5:00 am. I boarded the bus around 6:00 am. If you arrive early, you will find less crowds and can also go to other nearby places and can return in a day. The last bus from Bhimashankar to Pune is around 6:00 pm.
There are lots of other places nearby, like Hanuman Lake,
Gupt Bhimashankar temple and other treks. For that you may need to stay
here for a day or two. Good staying options are available near Bhimashankar, so
you can stay and at night you can also do stargazing. You can go there early in
the morning without getting fresh (like me) because there are good options
available near the bus stop to get fresh and take a bath before heading to the
temple.
Until next time, keep traveling and take care of nature.
