India is home to some of the most incredible forts in the world however it also has some sea forts which are less known but even more incredible. These sea forts are perfect examples of remarkable Indian history and its architect. Most of these are sea forts in Maharashtra as it is built during Maratha Empire. 1. Sindhudurg Fort

Sindhudurg Fort also known as Malvan fort, because it is located in Malvan, Maharashtra. It is an iconic maritime fortress built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1664-1667. Nestled on a rocky island in the Arabian Sea, you can see imprints of hands and feet of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. There’s also a unique temple dedicated to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj where his statute is in disguise like local community of this land because he stayed here in disguise. It also features massive ramparts, secret tunnels, and over 40 bastions, offering a glimpse into its strategic significance.

2. Murud-Janjira Fort

Located near the coastal town of Murud in Maharashtra, Murud-Janjira Killa is a magnificent sea fort built on an oval-shaped rock in the Arabian Sea. Janjira fort is built in 15th century by the Siddis. It is considered one of the strongest marine forts in the world as it remains unconquered despite repeated attacks by the Portuguese, Marathas, and Mughals. Janjira Killa is accessible only by sailboats from Rajapuri jetty. Surrounded by the sea, it houses remnants of cannons, palaces and freshwater tanks. Murud-Janjira is a unique blend of architectural marvel and historical significance, attracting tourists and history enthusiasts.

3. Kolaba Fort

Symbol of resilience and architectural brilliance, Kolaba fort served as a naval base and a strategic defense point against invading forces during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Built in 17th century Kolaba is famously known as sea fort featuring towering walls, cannons, freshwater wells, and temples, including one dedicated to Lord Ganapati, which remains a center of devotion. Colaba fort is another great example of Maratha’s well-planned defenses and quarters for soldiers. During low tide you can access it on foot but during high tide you need to board a boat to reach here. 

4. Vijaydurg Fort

Built during the reign of Raja Bhoj II in the 12th century Vijaydurg fort was later fortified by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It served as a strategic naval base for the Maratha Empire. It is famously known as the “Gibraltar of the East.” Vijaydurg boasts unique features like a submerged wall in the Arabian Sea for defense, underground tunnels, and remnants of ancient structures.

5. Suvarndurg Fort

Suvarndurg means “Golden fort” which denotes its prominence during the Maratha era. Spread over an island, Suvarnadurg is accessible only by boat and features sturdy stone walls, bastions, and remnants of watchtowers. The fort also has underground tunnels and secret passageways, reflecting its strategic significance.

6. Daria Bahadurgad Fort

Situated on an island near Malpe, Karnataka; Daria Bahadurgad fort was built in 17th century by Basavappa Nayaka of Bidanur. It used to serve as a watchtower and a protective naval base. Enjoy the scenic beauty of Arabian Sea and remnants of its historical past, including stone walls and structures.
