In India it is said that true India resides in its villages. Villages show its true culture and tradition that cannot be find in the fast life of city. So, today let us see few of the most unique villages to explore in India.

1. Kongthong, Meghalaya

All the places of this Himalayan State Meghalaya are worth visiting and are full of scenic views, waterfalls, greenery and mountains.

However, Kongthong is also known for its very unique culture that gave it the name of Whistling Village. In this village everyone’s name is pronounced by a unique whistle which they get at the time of birth from their mother. Everyone here has 2 whistles as their name one shorter whistle which is used to call when they are near while the other one is longer whistle which is used when they are farther. The villagers also have one regular name which are mostly used for documentation and as on government ID.

This unique tradition has attracted a lot of tourists around the globe.

2. Khonoma, Nagaland

This Naga village once famous for hunting and has turned itself into Asia’s 1st Green Village. It took them 20 years to become Asia’s 1st Green Village and their journey is a proof that if we intent to go green we could achieve it easily. From hunting to farming their shift is remarkable and has got many recognitions nationally and internationally.

3. Shetphal, Maharashtra

Snake are worshipped all over India on different occasions. But there is a village where snakes like cobras live together as a family member in each house. These snakes roam anywhere in the houses and in this village freely; no one is scared of them they are just like any other human resident of this village. And this gives this village a title of Snake Village.

4. Mattur, Karnataka

Mattur is the village where world’s oldest language is still used till date for day-to-day conversation. The village is known as a center for learning Sanskrit and Vedic studies. The villagers here have decided to use Sanskrit as their primary language in 1981 and their efforts made them Sanskrit Village. Here you will see children starts learning Vedas at the age of 10 only.

5. Kuldhara, Rajasthan

Cursed Village, Haunted Village or Ghost Village; Kuldhara is known by all these names. This village used to be very prosperous 300 year ago and now is an abandoned village in the Great Indian desertThe story behind this haunted village goes like this. 

A cruel minister Salim Singh have increased taxes very much did not treat villagers well. One day he saw a priest daughter and wanted to marry her forcefully. Seeing this the priest decided to leave this village. All the villagers decided to leave the village with him and they cursed the village that no one would be able to settle in this village.

6. Mawlynnong, Meghalaya

While India do have few of the most polluted cities of the world but it also has few of the cleanest villages of the world and one of them is Mawlynnong: Asia’s Cleanest Village. This beautiful village has a lot to offer to travellers like scenic view, living root bridge, wonderful bamboo handicrafts etc.

7. Jambur, Gujarat

Located in the dense forest of Gir there is a village famously known as India’s Mini African Village. People of this tribe are of African Origin and came here 100s of years ago. It has attracted lots of tourist because of its unique African culture, you will feel like you have come to Africa after visiting here.

8. Shani Shingnapur, Gujarat

The villagers here have a huge faith in Lord Shani, it also has a famous Shani temple which is visited by many devotees around the globe. Their believe in God Shani and their honesty is such, that there are no doors in houses, shops even this village has worlds only Bank without doors. Their honesty and believe gave this village the title of Village with no Doors.

9. Kodinhi, Kerala

This village is the matter surprise and miracle for everyone as here everyone has a twin and that is why it is famously known as Village of Twins. Even science has not been able to find out the mystery behind this abnormal phenomenon.

10. Malana, Himachal Pradesh

This Ancient Indian village is one of the first democracies of the world. People here has their own parliament and judiciary. People of this village claim they are the descendants of the soldiers of Alexander the Great and don’t let any outsiders touch anyone or anything in their village. Because of their strict rule for outsiders and huge fines the village is also known as Village of Taboos.
