Day 63: Elephanta Caves History

Historians says that this Elephanta Caves were built between mid-4th and 5th Century A.D.β›°οΈπŸ˜πŸ€―

However, archaeological remains reveals occupation from early 2nd Century B.C. βš’οΈπŸ˜²

Here, you will find 7 Caves πŸ˜ƒ

And from this 7 Caves; 5 are dedicated to Lord Shiva and rest 2 Caves are dedicated to Gautam BuddhaπŸ§˜πŸ»πŸ•‰οΈπŸ’«.

First, I went to Great Cave 1, where I have seen many beautiful Sculptures of Lord ShivaπŸ•‰οΈπŸ”±.

Second, I went to Cave 2 via passage by Cave 1πŸ’ƒπŸ˜‡.

This first and second caves are internally connected with each otherπŸ”—.

In Cave 3, you will see 6 pillars at the entranceπŸ›οΈ.

Cave 1 Elephanta Island

Cave 4 has 3 small rooms🀸.

Cave 5 is unfinished and have no artistic remnantsβš’οΈ.

Cave 6 and Cave 7 are two Buddhist Caves and from historians’ point of view, it seems that Buddhist were the first occupant of this Elephanta IslandπŸͺ·β˜ΈοΈ.

Many art works including Stone Elephant and Stone Horse were stolen by Portuguese and Britishers form here🐘🐎.

The real name of this island is Gharapuri which means Village of Caves in Marathi Languageβ›°οΈπŸžοΈ.
