Bhagsunag, Mcleodganj also known as Bhagsunath temple, is one of the most ancient temples in Dharamshala. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. So, today let’s see ancient Bhagsunag temple history:
During the mid of Dwapar Yug (one of the four Yug in Hindu Dharma), Bhagsu was a Rakchas (Demon) king of a village. His kingdom was facing a water crisis from many days due to which his people are sad and requested their ministers to talk to the King and find water for us otherwise we have to live the village. So, his public ministers asked him to arrange water otherwise they will live. King Bagsu was a Rakchas himself and knows magic, he assured everyone that he will arrange water soon and will go for its search himself. He continued his search for water for 2 days and reached near Dal Lake. Dal lake belons to Nag devta (Sake king) and he have gone for travelling and checking on his villagers. When King Bagsu reached at dal lake, no one was present. Using his magical powers, he took all the water of Dal Lake in a small Kamandal (mug). And happily, started his journey back to his kingdom. He was extremely tired because of his long journey so he thought of taking rest for some time. He took a break here and slept here.

When Nag Devta returned, he found Dal Lake dry, he got extremely angry. Following footprints, he reached at this place where Bhagsu was resting. They both had a huge fight and all the water fell here; it also filled back the dry Dal Lake. Nag Devta defeated the Bhagsu Rakchas and during his last breath he prayed to Nag Devta. Nag devta got happy from him and asked Bhagsu to ask for any boon. Bhagsu told him, I want to be famous and known to the whole world. Nag Devta gave him a blessing that at this place your name will be taken before my name. That is why this temple is called Bhagsu-Nag temple and this place is known as Bhagsu-Nag. This incident took place around 9137 years ago.
During start of Kali Yug, it was under the kingdom of King Dharm Chand. He built this temple after getting a dream from lord Shiv around 5133 years ago.
The current temple was rebuilt by 1st Gorkha rifles in early 18th century.
It is now very famous and sacred place for both pilgrimage and tourists.
There is a very famous and beautiful waterfall nearby Bhagsu waterfall. It is just 1 KM hike from here.
Let me know which story you want to know next.
Until next time, keep travelling and take care of Nature.
